CA Vision HDSLR Rig

Today we review the CA Vision shoulder Brace, Rails and Follow Focus for the HDSLR market.

Unleashed had the CA Vision setup to use on a Boxing show TV pilot shot last weekend in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

The unit in action:

The setup we tested is aimed at the budget segment of the market, the units are well put together and pretty sturdy. The rails are lightweight and do their job perfectly. The shoulder brace is fully adjustable and can be set to use as a front chest support, over the shoulder brace or folded down and balanced on something at a lower angle ie your knee or the floor. The handles are plastic, but comfortable to hold.

The follow focus has a rather smooth action and doesn't vibrate when being turned, my only issue with it, is that it no focus rings are supplied for your lenses, we put our own together using various rings and duct tape - which actually worked out pretty well!

CA Vision have created a LCD magnifier which gives you a much larger view of the LCD screen. I didn't like the unit in terms of sharp focus, but it was helpful in seeing a bigger picture. I ended up focusing with the LCD magnifier and then using it if my face was far away from the camera. Again - not bad in terms of price, you could get the Zacuto Z-Finder = but that alone costs half as much as this entire rig... your choice.

We used the Genus Matte Box with the rig, i love this product, its lightweight and really well put together, worked a dream along side the CA Vision unit.

Conclusion:
At the end of the day, i don't think there is another product which can compete at this price point! Next level up in terms of price and quality would be the new Genus rig (unreleased currently) and the Zacuto rig, which are about double and triple the price respectively!
